Part Three: Refuting The Third Lie

Part Three, Refuting the third lie…
“The Bible is outdated and no longer applies today.”

For every action there is a negative or positive reaction; force equals mass times acceleration. In the same way, the Bible describes moral laws, spiritual laws, natural laws, and cosmic laws. Times have changed, but God has never changed. Also, there are spiritual laws in the universe –fixed by God –that can never change. These timeless truths are found in Word of God!

The Word of God “is”…

The Word of God is Eternal: “without beginning or end of existence” (NWD, Noah Webster Dictionary 1828). Isaiah 40:8 says, “The grass withers and the flower fades, but the Word of the Lord will endure forever.” It is before time, above time, beyond time, and has transcended into time within the pages of the Bible and Person of Jesus Christ. While some things fade out with time; the Bible will out fade time itself.

The Word of God is Infallible: “never capable of erring; entirely exempt from liability to mistake. No man is infallible; to be infallible is the prerogative of God only” (NWD). Isaiah 55:11 says, “So shall my word be that goes out of my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it (ESV)”. A man may fail you. You will even fail yourself. But the Word of God will always accomplish what it says; it will never fail.

The Word of God is Immutable: “invariable, and unalterable; not capable or susceptible of change” (NWD). Hebrews 6:16-18 says, “For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.” Unlike your credit card rate, which isn’t fixed, but subject to change, Gods Word will never change. A man may lie to you, but the Word of God will never lie. You will never open its pages and find out that God has changed His mind.

The Word of God is inerrant: “without error, exempt from mistake” (NWD). Jesus defended the Word’s inerrability when he said, “For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is fulfilled” (Matt.5:18). An iota (or yod) is the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet; and a dot (or tittle) was a little stroke that we could compare to what distinguishes an R from a P. Every letter and stroke is inspired, not just the concepts and principles. We have no right to cherry pick the Bible.

The Word of God is plenary: “complete, full and entire” (NWD). We have all that God wants us to have. It is sufficient for everything which God intended. There is nothing that needs to be added or taken away from it (Rev. 22:18-19, Deut. 4:2).

The Word of God is alive and powerful (Heb.4:12). It can speak directly to your heart. It sheds light on things previously unknown (Ps.119:139). It warns and reward’s us (Ps.119:6-11). It leads us down a lighted path in this dark world of uncertainty (Ps.119:105).

The Word of God is about Jesus Christ…
Jesus said to the religious leaders, “You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about me” (Jn.5:39 NAS).

The Word of God is about Salvation…
When writing Timothy, Paul said, “And that from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ” (2Tim.3:15 NIV). Also, in his introductory theme to the Roman church, he said, “It (The Gospel) is the power of God for salvation of everyone who believes” (Rom.1:16 NIV). God gave us His Word to provide the necessary knowledge to know why we need to be saved, and how to be saved.

The Word of God is practical. Not only does it have answers for our spiritual needs, but for all things pertaining to this life. There is advice on financial investments: Ecclesiastes 11:1 says, “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days”. This is a principle teaching on investment. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. It gives counsel for marriage: Ephesians 5:21 tells the husband and wife, “to submit themselves to one another in the fear of God”. If each spouse equally looks out for the interest of the other (mutual submission), then they will be equally satisfied. Proverbs 12:10 talk about the treatment of animals: “The righteous man has regard for the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.”

The Word of God is practical and it still applies today. God’s Word is full of practical wisdom and advice that will guard your life. Most importantly, the Word of God reveals a way for a sinner to be right with a holy God. Hell is real. Heaven is real. Death is real. And you will end up in one of two places. I would say that’s important. In fact, I would say that it’s vitally important. Let me tell you….
