The Church: God’s Heavenly and Eternal Gaze

In Christ Jesus, we have been given “every spiritual blessing in heavenly places” (Eph1:3b). These blessings are spiritual and they spelled out throughout the book of Ephesians. We are blessed with adoption (1:5), redemption (1:7), an eternal inheritance (1:11), the Holy Spirit (1:13-14), hope (1:18), power (1:19), grace (2:7-8), purpose (2:10), access to God (2:18), revelation (3:1-7), confidence before God (3:12), the love of God (3:19), the church (ch.4), spiritual gifts (4:8), a new life (4:17-5:21), a godly marriage, family and relationships (5:22-6:9), the full armor of God (6:10-18), and more treasures still hidden within this magnificent book!

The book of Ephesians is a handy go-to guide for ecclesiology. Whereas the Pastoral Epistles deal with the Congregational Church, Ephesians gives us an eternal and heavenly perspective into the Universal Church. The word Church is used nine times in Ephesians (1:22, 3:10, 3:21, 5:23, 24, 25, 27, 29, 32); as well, it alludes to the Church throughout. Only the book of Acts and 1 Corinthians use the word Church more often. Here are some systematic doctrinal summaries of Ephesians. We’ll take it one chapter at a time!
