The Garden of Eden is fascinating. It was a real place. In this garden, God placed every kind of animal species. Every tree in the garden was pleasant to the sight and good for food. There was nothing harmful, undesirable, or unpleasant. Adam and Eve were to care for and have dominion over the animals. And the garden was to be tended by them. There were two special trees in the garden: “tree of life” and “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil”.
There was nothing inherently special about these two trees. The tree of life did not have the power of life; nor did the tree of the knowledge of good and evil have the power of death. While sinless, Adam and Eve were worthy to partake of the tree of life. It was a right reserved for the righteous. It symbolized Mans’ right standing with God. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was a test. The only difference with this tree was the sanction God placed on it. He forbade Adam and Eve to eat of it. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil did not bring death. God punished their sin with death. The power of life and death belongs to God alone.
